This concentration of this research department is in line with the work undertaken by the Research Center for Historical and Cultural Sciences (HKFZ) of the Trier and Mainz universities, promoted by the state of Rhineland-Palatinate. It defines itself as a research organisation of scientists throughout the world who thematically work in the manifold field of Byzantine Archaeology.        The Byzantine Archaeology department of Mainz has set the goal of establishing a Byzantine Archaeology by way of an institutionalised, interdisciplinary cooperation between byzantinistics, Christian archaeology, Byzantine history of art, archaeology of the Roman provinces and pre- and early history.It is run by representatives of these fields working at the RGCM and the university.
